      The Day After

T’was the day after Christmas, and all through the town
The last of the merriment was still winding down

The wrappings and bows so delightful to see
Were now all just part of the pile of debris

The dumpsters were full and batteries spent
And those who had come, hauled off and went

Abandoned on the floor, the fancy new toy
Children play with the boxes and squeal with joy.

Another nights sleeplessness is a safe bet
About dealing with staggering credit card debt.

It was so much fun putting up all the lights
Now we dread their removal in a dozen more nights

The cookies and candy that made all the rounds
Have relentlessly become fifteen extra pounds

The heirloom ornaments made of fine glass
Have finally succumbed to the swats of the cats

The TV news is all jazzed up and abuzz
Telling us all about the old year that was.

      Can’t say I’m interested, I really don’t care
The only thing I’ll be missing is the rest of my hair.

Upcoming New Year parties are beckoning
Doomed then also to the post-party reckoning

Me, I’ll be happy to go to bed around eight
The morning after ain’t worth the staying up late

There’s a lot of other folks, I’d venture to say
Will likely admit they feel the same way.

And may the coming New Year nail you good …
Right where it’ll bless both you and your brood.

      Bah! Humbug!

      (Harrumph!)

      Humbug

And on a more useful note …

        2023 >>>=————–=> 2024

So the old year is gone
        out the window I guess
        And leaving behind it
        the typical mess

        The sins are committed
        and the debris stacked deep
        And scattered throughout —
        vows yet to keep

        There are chores left undone,
        tasks neatly forgotten
        Some deals that worked,
        more that turned rotten

        A lot of milk spilled
        but I didn’t keep score
        It’s inevitable perhaps
        There will always be more.

        Everyone is rushing
like it’s some kind of race
        And it’s horribly clear
in the fear on their face.

        The worry lines carved
        deep in their brow
        As if it all mattered
        was important somehow.

But if that’s how you see it
        how it relates
        you’ll end up doomed
        by the aces and eights.

See, it’s not about how fast
        or even how far
        that defines the truth
        about who we are.

        It’s not about the critter
        his size or his speed
nor the tack and the gear
        we’re all sure we need.

        Not about the plans
        nor the schedules to keep
        Not about the networks
        nor the deals you reap.

        Not about the ends
        nor even the means
        not about your friends
not the shoes or the jeans

        Not about being skinny
        the food and the drink
        Not even really,
        about what you might think

        For these are all distractions
        methods and tools
        in which we indulge
        and thus become fools.

        It’s just not important
        the world without
        it’s not what you mumble
        nor what you shout.

        It’s not what you want
        nor what you feel
        It’s what happens inside
        that means a great deal.

        It’s all about taming
        the beast of yourself
        putting your ego
        back up on the shelf

        It’s shutting back down
        the noise within
        helping God help you
        to lower the din.

        Then when the calm
        takes over your soul
        wonder as parts
        once again become whole

        Then open the shutters
        clean off the glass
        Let God’s love come shining
        through you at last.

        Perchance that some others
        may catch in a glance
        that with the right guidance
        we’ve all got a chance.

That we’ve got a new year
        to try just once more
        to do so much better
        than we did just before.

May God bless you and keep you
        close to his heart.
‘Cuz the best gift of all
        is another new start.

        ***

        Happy New Year folks.
