On April 15 I was invited to an impromptu Parks On The Air (POTA) “activation” at Coffee Mill Lake in northern Fannin County. Kathy and I live between Coffee Mill and Crockett Lakes, so when I heard Club members Mark Johnson (W5PTX), Johnny Thomas (WB5JT) and Haskell Maroney (K5HRM) were going to do this exercise, I just had to go.
The three of them got there at about 1000 and started setting up. I showed up late and due to previous commitments I had to leave early, but I had a blast the two hours I was there (1030-1230). They ran two stations and between the two there were several dozen contacts made. I will add some pictures at the end of the post. You will note Mark has 3D printed a frame for one of his rigs. With lessons learned from prior POTA activations both Mark and Haskell have refined their transportation crates and made them very utilitarian for these activities.
When they were done they texted me they were breaking down and heading to Honey Grove for lunch at El Molcajete Mexican Grill (pronounced like it is spelled LOL) (712 14th Street – Honey Grove – TX – 75446) (903-378-4045). That Tex-Mex lunch was as good as I have had. I had never eaten there before, but I think it is the same group formerly at the defunct Doc’s location out on the west end of town. If you are ever hankering for Tex-Mex, I can recommend it.
The radio operating activity was fun and educational for me. Mark and Haskell have quite a bit of POTA experience between them, but Johnny has forgotten more about radio than I will ever know. It was a real joy doing this with them and I look forward to doing it again. If you ever learn they are planning one of these, I urge you to tag along or meet them. The group is warm and welcoming and you will guaranteed have a great time.
