All,
This is not a substitute for meeting minutes, but there was a lot that happened yesterday and so I wanted to make a quick forum post that covered the highpoints.
UPDATE: Well, little other than this narrative was “quick”. I had to increase the size of file our server would allow to be uploaded. That required a chat session with our host. Then I had to split and shrink one of the presentations. All of that took quite awhile to do, so my apologies for not getting this up sooner.
This was the first use of High Cotton for a Club meeting. The location got a resounding thumbs up from those that were present, so following the meeting Club officers met with ownership and arranged to continue having regular Club meetings there for the foreseeable future. VE testing will continue to be performed at Ramseur Baptist Church, but Club meetings will now be done at High Cotton in their back meeting room.
The facility has adequate seating for even large Club gatherings. There is a permanently installed projector mounted on the ceiling and a pull-down projection screen. These were used to good effect for presentations.
We had 19 total persons in attendance. Jerry Williams (KI5HML) brought a guest (Jim Bell) who is an aspiring ham.
The board of directors had previously approved a new proposed Club logo for presentation to the group at our next meeting. The membership approved the new Club logo and here is a copy of the image:

Thank you Jerry Keisler (WA5KZA) for the enduring basic image that he generated in 2002 and for the update that he provided us here. That image will now be used on the masthead of Club emails and will be provided to vendors for design and generation of sample embroidery.
Dan Beard (KB7JZI) did a presentation reference the tornado event of 11/04/2022 – Post Response Training. That presentation is available at this link: Presentation.
Charles Penry (WA5VHU), with input from Mel Toye (K5KEY), Leo Salas (N5JEP) and Phillip Beall (W5EBC) did a presentation reference the tornado event of 11/04/2022. That presentation is available at these links: Presentation Part 1 and Presentation Part 2.
From the feedback we received the group all had a good time. One remarked “There wasn’t anything boring about this meeting!” Yay! That has been the goal the Club leadership has been working towards – Make meetings about fun and educational stuff with little to no “business”. That is what officers are elected for, to take care of the non-fun stuff.
As a reminder, important upcoming dates and what has recently been posted to the forums is located on the Club Home Page. Just scroll down and look in the lower left corner. Here is a screen capture:

Kelly Collins (W5KJC) presented a check to the Club officers for over $1,400 for our share of the Lion’s Club Fair proceeds. Thank you Kelly and thanks to all that participated! And speaking of thanks, Mark (W5PTX) and Michelle Johnson made a very generous financial donation to the Club. Thank you Mark and Michelle!
Questions? Comments? Critique? This is your Club and your forum, please let us know your thoughts. A common misperception is that a lack of forum posts means a lack of interest and a lack of participants. I have been a forum moderator and/or admin on sites with many tens of thousands of members. We used to informally look at the percentage of “lurkers” versus active participants. In all cases lurkers far and away outnumbered the participants. Here is a study if you are interested:
The 90-9-1 Rule for Participation Inequality in Social Media and Online Communities
Summary: In most online communities, 90% of users are lurkers who never contribute, 9% of users contribute a little, and 1% of users account for almost all the action.
So, would I love to get a lot of feedback on every post that people make? Absolutely. Do I think with ~40 members, typically 20 at a Club meeting and with people as busy as they are, our forums should be a hub of activity like perhaps FaceBook or some other social media sites? No. And if that study linked to above is accurate then we are lucky to have four members contribute a little! So, if you read something you like, please validate the poster by hitting reply and giving them a “Yay!” or something, even if you don’t want to write a treatise.
To be clear, you can save the replies and follow up for other posts. If you got this far reading this post, thanks! Mission accomplished.
