All,
I was wanting to check in and see if anyone could give us some feedback on the club’s GMRS repeater at the Atlas site (462.600 PL 88.5 in/out).
Has anyone been using it yet? I’d love to hear some real-world coverage reports from different locations around the area.
A few things that would be helpful if you’re willing to share:
- Where were you located when you tried it?
- Handheld or mobile?
- How was the signal (full quieting, noisy, marginal, etc.)?
- Any particular dead spots or surprises you’ve noticed?
For comparison, Kathy and I run a GMRS repeater here at the house in Honey Grove. The antenna is only about 20 feet AGL and we’re pretty buried in the trees, so we only get roughly a mile of usable range. That makes me curious — what kind of range are people actually getting from the Club repeater at the Atlas site?
Even a short note helps us understand how well it’s performing and where the coverage is strongest.
Thanks in advance — I’m looking forward to hearing from anyone who’s keyed it up.

I have some land about a mile North of the North Sulphur river on Hwy 19/24, my residence is about 10 miles East of there. Today I checked to see if I could hit the repeater from my land and transmit back home to my wife. I hit the repeater with no problem with a 5w handheld GMRS radio. We both heard each other clearly with no interference. At home I have a Wouxon KG XS20H for a base with a antenna about 50 ft up. I have monitored the repeater some but so far I haven’t heard anyone else on it. So my report is it works great and look forward to using it in the future, thanks RRVARC for putting it up and Haskel for donating it!

August 1, 2026 at 10:38 am #49204UPDATE: This morning I fixed something about our forums that has been driving me crazy. I don’t have everyone’s call sign memorized and, as an example, I thought Jerry’s post above was by club membership applicant John Webb (W5JMW). When I finally realized my error it made me spend a couple of hours figuring out and implementing the fix. Now whenever someone makes a forum post it displays their name and their call sign. Viola! No more confusion about who I am responding to. Jerry, thanks for the post and I’ll go send a follow up email to John explaining something I said in an email to him earlier. 😁😎
