This Wall Street Journal article Electronic Warfare Spooks Airlines, Pilots and Air-Safety Officials (free link) does an adequate job of covering a recent development for many of my peers. One statement makes me scratch my head “American said it hasn’t experienced disruptions or significant safety concerns from GPS interference.” – That was a carefully crafted statement. I know the first half of it is BS. I have friends that have recently chatted with me reference their first-hand experience with the issue. And the very first pilot quoted in the very first sentence is an AA pilot that I personally know. So, AA needs to get their messaging straight on this.
Another carefully made statement, very carefully, is this one “The FAA said it knew of no spoofing events in the U.S.” Reference spoofing specifically, maybe. But, jamming?… Crews regularly experience jamming over the western United States. It is the US government testing equipment. We know it and we expect it, this has become routine. We just tell ATC that we are experiencing jamming and to let us know if they are not happy with our navigation path. It usually resolves within 30 minutes.
To be clear, we do have back up systems that can be used to navigate enroute and to make approaches to land. So, generally speaking, this is a non-issue, especially domestically. But it is worth researching and ensuring crews are aware. If you are flying in or near war zones, you have to be mindful of a lot of additional…issues. Spoofing is certainly one of them.
