    All,

Mid-morning with a significant ice accumulation Kathy was headed outside to put out birdseed and then head over to our shopdominium.  The birdseed is in a galvanized trashcan in the back yard and we have it chained shut to keep the racoon and opossum out of it.  The little snap-link/clip thing is (from experience) prone to icing up.  Kathy has a Bernzomatic torch she keeps in the house and she had it by the door ready to go:

I was counseling her that if she started to fall, drop the torch and save herself.  She then said “What I wish I had one of those little lighters like you have in your Cliff Pack.”  Club member Cliff Leath (KI5OPP) has a little pack that he takes everywhere.  When I spotted it during the Autumn in Bonham bike rally a couple of years ago I replicated it.  I told her “Hang on, let me grab that for you.”  Here is what it looks like:

OK, she went out there and it worked perfectly.  Pocked-sized, she threw that in her pocket and could then glove up and use both hands to navigate the stairs, open the gate, etc.  And the lighter?  It worked perfectly for the snap-link, which was indeed frozen.

If you want your own Bernzomatic torch like the bigger one above, they are available everywhere (Home Depot, hardware stores, Walmart, etc.).  The lighters we bought from Amazon.  The kit at this link is the one depicted above and it comes with a refill.  The package is $18.99.

I put one of these into my old classic Zippo lighter case, and love it.
