All,
I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. Not everything went smoothly for everyone. Cliff Leath’s mother-in-law fell on Christmas Eve morning and broke her humerus just below the shoulder. And the previous night my sister called Kathy and I at 2010, telling us that my brother-in-law might be having a heart attack at their home at Cedar Creek Lake. I told her to give him a full-sized aspirin and get to Baylor Dallas ASAP. He turned out OK, pleurisy causing chest pain that radiated into his left arm, but we were all up until the early hours of Christmas Eve worrying like crazy. Hopefully the Leath’s and Beall’s were the only ones with that kind of drama.
As I was reading the Wall Street Journal over coffee this morning this article – Lessons in Kindness From Hundreds of Wall Street Journal Readers – caught my eye. By not posting this to the News part of the forum I hope I tricked one of my buddies into seeing the headline. LOL Anyway, I read it and am again passing along a “gift” link that the WSJ affords subscribers with some, not all but some, of their articles. Along the lines of the article I had a friend stuck in a hotel for Christmas and I texted and told him to Uber to a Waffle House, have a great breakfast and “tip the waitress $100”. I went on to tell him that it would make for a memorable moment for each of them. I occasionally will pay for an obvious single-mother with kid’s groceries or put gas into someone’s car because Kathy and I have been blessed. With my medical grounding last fall and into this year we clearly took a financial hit, but some of those around us live the consequences of a bad financial situation every day of the week with no prospect of the situation improving in the foreseeable future. Whether it is a financial gesture or one of the many other things one might do, things like holding the door for someone frail, stopping to help with a flat tire, offering to return the cart at Home Depot or a grocery store; all of these things will make you feel fantastic and I strongly urge it. Helping someone who genuinely needs it does something for you too.
Finally, when Vicki Ross (KG5YWO) passed away she left behind a couple of cats. Dan (KB7JZI) and Connie (KB7JZH) Beard told us they were going to try and catch them and get them into loving homes. They
wound up keeping one and the one Kathy and I were going to take, well, my parents (Stanley and Wanda) asked if they could have her? Here are pictures of my parents (I blurred out an annoying back light behind Dad.) at Christmas with “Callie” the calico kitty. She could not have asked for a more wonderful cat existence. Clean cat litter box, lots of love and attention and no shortage of food. Gentle and sweet, she asks to climb up into both of their laps and then kneads and purrs while giving the love back. Kathy and I both just loved the obvious enjoyment Callie is giving them. And I am pretty sure Dan and Connie are treating the other one the very same way. Vicki would no doubt laugh at how spoiled her two “inside/outside” cats are now.Merry Christmas and the Happiest of New Years!
