Kathy and I avoided “smartphone” technology for years when it first came out.  We finally broke down for the iPhone 3GS as I recall.  Ever since then there have been peaks and valleys in our satisfaction.  One recent aggravation is that the Fox News app added a full-screen advertisement that pops up as you scroll down the list of stories.  Worse yet, it doesn’t give you the ability to close the advertisement for several seconds.  You are forced to look at the advertisement or just close the app.  Very – VERY – annoying.

Kathy has a girlfriend that simply does not update her iPhone and iPad.  Ever.  Or any of their apps.  They work the way she wants them to and she is unwilling to get improvements at the risk of losing control over what she currently has.  With iOS apps you can’t roll back to a previous version.  Once it is installed it is permanently installed.  So, I can see her reticence to update/upgrade her iOS or apps.

This morning I cracked up when I saw the Wall Street Journal headline – Meet the Never-Updaters: Why Some People Refuse to Download New Software.  That link will load a free “gift” of the article, which WSJ provides subscribers on some of their articles.  The article is more about people who don’t update their operating system rather than the apps on their device, but it is part and parcel the same thing.  VERY ANNOYING!

Dang.   Still couldn’t read it.    Paywall wouldn’t budge.

That said, count me among the reticent to update.   Not particularly a Luddite … I just take the time to actually read the assorted Privacy Policies and EULAs involved, and most of the time I don’t agree to them.
