He died two years before I was born, but clearly Speaker Sam Rayburn was a fascinating guy.  The North Texas e-News has a story about him today.  Quotes from the guy say a lot:

          I know one thing; if a position changes a person, that person is not big enough for the position. Just mark that down.

          I believe there is still some sanity in Washington, although it doesn’t come to surface as often as it used to.

I can personally say that I think those are still very accurate.  Enjoy those quotes and some other tidbits about the man at Remembering the passing of Sam Rayburn.
