In our July 29, 2023 Club News Update we mentioned the April 8, 2024 Solar Eclipse that is supposed to be one for the ages. Examples of previous eclipses such as this, with stories of rural America Interstate highways grinding to a halt as people parked their vehicles and got out to look at it, cell towers being overwhelmed and dropping offline; planning has started on how the event might be properly prepared for.
Emergency Management Coordinators (EMCs) all over are in discussions about how to handle the influx of thousands or even tens of thousands of persons interested in witnessing and participating in the event. The RRVARC officers are in the early stages of developing a plan with Lamar County and other EMCs and surrounding clubs. We will keep you updated as to our efforts. In the meantime, we wanted to provide you with the static image below that clearly depicts the locally/regionally affected area. Clarksville is smack in the middle of it, as is Sulphur Springs and other cities/towns we are all familiar with. All,
In a demonstration of just how seriously local officials are taking the matter, please click Spring total eclipse likely to fill Paris facilities; get prepared and read up on it. The event will be on April 8, 2024. We will try and keep this forum post updated as planning firms up with respect to Club participation. We have been told that local preparedness planners do desire our participation. What form that participation may take is still being formulated.

All,
This will be the biggest solar eclipse event in this area in our lifetime. No matter what you are doing, you and your family and friends are likely to want to at least watch it. We all can remember the safe way we were told to do it in years gone by, poking a hole in a piece of paper and then letting the sun shine through the hole onto another piece of paper. Some advocated using welders shades. We want to make another suggestion.
If you click this link and go to Amazon, they have many NASA approved offerings. They range from plastic framed “sunshade” appearing offerings to cardboard frame versions to square cardboard versions with a tinted window for you to hold up in front of your prescription glasses. The bottom line is this – We expect as the date gets nearer these options may get in short supply or price gouging may occur. Right now you can buy some of these items for less than $2 per pair. At that price you can buy a box of them and give them away at Christmas if you want. In any case, we wanted to provide an early option and encourage everyone to at least secure a pair for yourself.

Eclipse Preparation Meeting
The City of Paris hosted an eclipse preparation meeting on September 19, 2023, at Love Civic Center. Dr. P. Clay Sherrod, educator and researcher in earth and physical sciences, astronomy and archeology, provided expert information from his observation and research of previous total solar eclipse events via a live video conference feed. A recording of the presentation is available below.
