Red River Valley Amateur Radio Club
Amateur Radio in and around the Red River Valley Area of Northeast Texas
All,
This Wall Street Journal article – The EV Battery of Your Dreams Is Coming – is a fascinating read. Jerry, Cliff, Mark and others that are constantly evaluating power options should be interested. The article covers a lot, but notably BMW is coming out with a new car and battery technology next year (2025).
According to the article, battery manufacturing capability is spending hugely, more than $30 billion in 2023 alone, so a new battery type will have to be really disruptive and provide incentive for the previously built manufacturing plants to convert. The two changes currently in development are a new, cylindrical shape for the battery cells, and the use of solid lithium metal, instead of the graphite that’s in today’s lithium-ion batteries.

Enjoy,

I do not know if I want to be riding on pure Lithium metal. There is also a battery out there that has 100 times the power density of lithium but they have not figured out how to get it past the microscope stage. (How to make it for public use.)
Jerry,
I am with you there. Clearly on point – A lot of work still needs to be done on energy management from the fire safety perspective on the entire topic. Whether involved in a wreck or parked in a residential garage, they are capable of thermal runaway situations that can have severe consequences. A year ago or so an EV was charging in the parking garage at DFW, had a thermal runaway and burned up a whole row of cars…
