Red River Valley Amateur Radio Club
Amateur Radio in and around the Red River Valley Area of Northeast Texas
All,
On a recent Monday night net Jerry Keisler (WA5KZA) was doing an informal survey of who had backup power options and what they were. The Beall’s have multiple redundant options and one of them is a Goal Zero Yeti 1000X. Their whole line can be viewed at http://www.goalzero.com.
Closing some of my open Firefox tabs this morning I ran across this Buy Side from Wall Street Journal article – This Portable Power Station Brings Me Peace of Mind in an Outage—and Powers Weekend Trips – which I have had open since September 23, 2023. I intended to post it here in the forums and just never did. Better late than never, this morning I confirmed with some non-WSJ subscribers that they could open it.
The article is pretty well written and illustrates how a non-ham might use it. For those of us that are generally preparedness-minded and specifically for use with ham gear in a grid-down scenario, something like this or a Goal Zero unit should be considered. Totally silent in operation they provide utility similar to what a noisy gasoline powered generator would provide. If you placed one in your ham shack you could have it powering your radio(s) all the time. In an outage, even one that occurred while you were on the air, you would not even get a blip.
I do not know about the product reviewed in the article above, but one advantage of the Goal Zero Yeti product is that it is one of the few power sources of this type that can both be charged and discharged at the same time. That is usually not the case and use of the Goal Zero Yeti affords one the opportunity to do as I suggested above, continuously power your ham gear in the shack and have it continue working seamlessly whether the utility power remains on or not.
Enjoy,
