Widespread cellular service disruptions are being reported in multiple areas of the United States this afternoon and evening. Some users are reporting difficulty completing or receiving voice calls, while data service may continue to function in some locations.

At this time, reports vary by carrier and location, and we have not seen confirmation that all cellular networks are experiencing a single nationwide outage. Nevertheless, the situation is a useful reminder of the value amateur radio can provide when normal communications systems become unavailable or unreliable.

      Club Members: Please Stay Radio-Ready

      Members are encouraged to:

      • Make sure your handheld and mobile radios are charged and operational.
      • Monitor our usual club and local emergency-communications repeaters.
      • Be prepared to use simplex if repeater or internet-linked systems become unavailable.
      • Keep spare batteries, charging equipment, and your programming information handy.
      • Give priority to emergency or welfare traffic if communications conditions warrant.
      • Avoid tying up repeaters with unnecessary traffic during an active communications emergency.

Please consider monitoring our linked primary repeaters:

      • UHF: 444.500+ MHz, PL 114.8
      • VHF: 147.020+ MHz, PL 167.9

Members may also optionally monitor the NCTC-connected repeater:

      • VHF: 146.760- MHz, PL 203.5

Unless requested by emergency-management officials or net control is activated, there is no need to self-deploy. Simply being prepared, listening, and keeping your station operational can make a difference if conventional communications become unavailable.

This situation also demonstrates one of amateur radio’s enduring strengths: our ability to communicate independently of the commercial cellular network and, when necessary, the internet.

We will update this notice if additional reliable information becomes available.

We were in Arlington this afternoon and couldn’t get the internet to run on Cindy and my AT&T phone for a while. We had plenty of bars and 5G service.

Nationwide Cellular Service Problems Reported — T-Mobile Users Again Reporting Possible Issues

            Updated: August 9, 2026 — 2:28 AM CDT

Cellular customers across the United States reported service disruptions involving several major wireless carriers on Saturday, August 8, with additional user reports continuing to appear into Sunday.

According to outage-monitoring reports, Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile all experienced increases in customer complaints Saturday. Reports were particularly elevated during the afternoon, with customers describing problems making or receiving calls and other cellular-service interruptions.

The primary confirmed network problem Saturday appears to have involved Verizon voice service. Verizon acknowledged an issue affecting voice services for some wireless customers and said its engineers were working on the problem. Verizon subsequently reported that the outage had been resolved.

            T-Mobile Reports

T-Mobile users also reported service problems on Downdetector during the incident. T-Mobile, however, stated Saturday that its network was operating normally and said an issue involving another wireless provider could affect the ability of T-Mobile customers to reach users on that network.

As of early Sunday, August 9, Downdetector’s T-Mobile page is again showing user reports suggesting possible problems. Because Downdetector is based largely on reports submitted by users, an increase in reports does not by itself confirm a nationwide T-Mobile network outage.

Radio operators and other communications users should therefore continue monitoring the situation, particularly if experiencing failed calls, intermittent cellular data, “SOS” indications, or difficulty communicating with users on other wireless networks.

RRVARC will update this information if additional details or carrier announcements become available.

Note: Outage-monitoring services such as Downdetector rely heavily on user-submitted reports. Elevated reports can indicate a developing service problem but should not be considered confirmation of a nationwide outage until supported by the affected carrier or other authoritative sources.

Cellular Service Update — Verizon Users Again Reporting Possible Problems

              Updated: August 9, 2026 — 0746 CDT

Following widespread cellular-service complaints involving several major wireless carriers on Saturday, the situation appears to have improved considerably Sunday morning, although Verizon is again showing an elevated level of user reports suggesting possible problems.

As of 0746 CDT Sunday, August 9, outage-monitoring service Downdetector is showing:

              • AT&T — No current problems reported
              • T-Mobile — No current problems reported
              • Verizon — User reports indicate possible problems

The latest reports follow a significant Verizon service disruption Saturday afternoon that affected wireless customers across the United States. Verizon acknowledged an issue affecting voice services and said its engineers were working to identify and resolve the problem.

Downdetector reports began climbing during the afternoon Saturday, with more than 12,000 to 13,000 Verizon problem reports recorded near the peak of the incident. Customers reported difficulty making telephone calls, sending messages and, in some cases, maintaining normal cellular connectivity.

Verizon later announced Saturday evening that the problem had been resolved. However, the renewed increase in user reports visible on Downdetector Sunday morning suggests that some customers may still be experiencing intermittent or localized difficulties. At this point, elevated user reports alone should not be interpreted as confirmation of another nationwide Verizon outage.

              AT&T and T-Mobile

Both AT&T and T-Mobile are currently showing no widespread problems on Downdetector.

Both carriers received increased outage reports during Saturday’s disruption. T-Mobile stated at the time that its own network was operating normally and noted that problems involving another wireless carrier could prevent T-Mobile customers from successfully reaching customers using that carrier. This may account for at least some of the reports involving carriers other than Verizon during the incident.

              What Users Should Watch For

Cellular users should continue monitoring their service, particularly if experiencing failed or dropped calls, intermittent data service, text-message failures, an “SOS” or “SOS Only” indication, or difficulty reaching customers on another wireless network.

Because Saturday’s disruption involved voice communications, amateur radio operators and emergency-communications volunteers may wish to remain aware of the situation should additional cellular problems develop.

              Updated Media Coverage

              • WRAL: Verizon outage resolved after several customers unable to make phone calls, company says — updated early Sunday morning with Verizon’s announcement that the outage had been resolved.
              • KSTP: Verizon says outage affecting users across the country has been resolved — reports that Downdetector received more than 13,000 reports at the peak of Saturday’s disruption.
              • Fox Business: Verizon suffers outage in some parts of U.S. with thousands of reports — reports more than 12,000 Downdetector complaints and Verizon’s acknowledgment that wireless voice services were affected.

RRVARC will continue monitoring the situation and update this information if additional carrier statements or significant service disruptions are reported.

Note: Downdetector relies largely on reports submitted by users. An increase in reports may identify a developing or localized service problem, but it does not by itself confirm a nationwide carrier outage.

Cellular Service Update — AT&T Users Reporting Possible Problems

                    Updated: August 10, 2026 — 0703 CDT

Cellular network conditions continue to change following the service disruptions reported over the weekend. As of Monday morning, outage-monitoring service Downdetector indicates that Verizon and T-Mobile are no longer showing current widespread problems, while user reports indicate possible problems with AT&T.

As of 0703 CDT Monday, August 10, Downdetector is showing:

                    • AT&T — User reports show possible problems
                    • Verizon — No current problems reported
                    • T-Mobile — No current problems reported

The current AT&T reports should be viewed as a developing situation. Downdetector is based largely on reports submitted by users, and an increase in those reports does not by itself establish that AT&T is experiencing a nationwide network outage.

At this time, there does not appear to be significant new national-media reporting confirming a widespread AT&T cellular outage Monday morning. AT&T customers experiencing problems can use the carrier’s official outage checker for information specific to their location.

                    Weekend Verizon Outage Resolved

The latest reports follow Saturday’s Verizon service disruption, which primarily affected voice calls for wireless customers in portions of the United States.

Verizon acknowledged the problem Saturday afternoon and said engineers were working to resolve an issue affecting wireless voice services. Downdetector recorded more than 13,000 Verizon reports near the height of the incident.

Verizon announced Saturday evening that its engineers had resolved the problem and advised customers who were still experiencing difficulties to restart their devices. Current Downdetector information now shows Verizon without a widespread problem indication.

T-Mobile, which also received increased user reports during Saturday’s incident, said at the time that its own network was operating normally. Problems communicating with customers on another carrier can sometimes generate reports involving more than one cellular network.

                    Current Network Status

                    • AT&T: Downdetector AT&T Status
                    • Verizon: Downdetector Verizon Status

                    Latest Media Coverage

                    • TechRadar: Verizon voice services were down for some — here’s everything we know — detailed coverage of Saturday’s incident, including the rise to more than 13,000 Downdetector reports and Verizon’s subsequent announcement that the voice-service problem had been resolved.
                    • WRAL: Verizon outage resolved after several customers unable to make phone calls — reports Verizon’s confirmation that the Saturday service disruption was resolved.

                    Monitoring Continues

Cellular users should continue to watch for failed or dropped calls, intermittent mobile-data service, unsuccessful text messages, an “SOS” or “SOS Only” indication, or difficulty reaching customers using another wireless carrier.

Because cellular communications can be important during emergencies, amateur radio operators and emergency-communications volunteers may wish to remain aware of changing network conditions should a more significant disruption develop.

RRVARC will continue monitoring the situation and update this information if AT&T confirms a service disruption or additional significant carrier problems are reported.

Note: Downdetector relies largely on reports submitted by users. Elevated reports may indicate a developing or localized service problem, but they should not be considered confirmation of a nationwide outage without supporting information from the affected carrier or other authoritative sources.

ALL CLEAR — Cellular Service Disruption Monitoring Concluded

                      Effective: 0800 CDT, Tuesday, August 11, 2026

As of 0800 CDT this morning, Downdetector was showing no reported issues for AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon.

Based on that status, the widespread cellular service disruption reported over the weekend is considered resolved.

Effective 0800 CDT today, RRVARC is issuing an ALL CLEAR and concluding monitoring of this event.

No further updates will be posted to this thread. Any future significant cellular-service disruption will be treated as a separate event.

Thank you to everyone who monitored the situation and remained radio-ready.

                      73,

                      Phillip Beall (W5EBC)
